System Improvements
Improved Pleura Patches
Simulab recently improved the realism of the Chest Tube procedure for the TraumaMan System. The black pleura patches have been replaced with a new material. The new pleura tissue:
- More accurately simulates the penetration of the pleura
- Is now red so it is more visually realistic
- Is easier to install and use - there is no specific side that needs to face out and the material is slightly tacky, so the patches stay in place, adhering to the ribs
Look for the new pleura patches in your next Chest Tissue Pack.
Tissues now easier to refill

To optimize blood flow during procedures, both the TraumaMan and TraumaChild tissues are now equipped with luer lock tips on the fluid reservoirs for easy refilling of fluid levels, should they become low.
Each shipment of tissues will now include two luer lock syringes. Mixing a few drops of red concentrate (included in the system's maintenance kit) with water creates simulated blood that the user can add to the system's tissues. Check your box of replaceable tissues for detailed instructions.
TraumaMan Around the World
After exhibiting at the 11th European Society of Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ESTES) Congress, Simulab was excited to attend the first ATLS course held in Belgium in many years. With nine different countries represented, it was a great honor to have TraumaMan used in skills training on such a global level.
Simulab also exhibited at the 13th International Conference on Emergency Medicine (ICEM) in Singapore earlier in the month and it was an overwhelming success. Representatives from 38 countries stopped by our booth to learn more about our simulators. TraumaMan in particular received constant traffic - he underwent dozens of chest tube insertions and an untold number of needle decompressions.
We are looking forward to supporting this international community as they continue to expand the use of simulation in their Emergency Medicine educational programs!
Helpful Hint #12: Installing a non-surgical trachea on TraumaMan

Each purchased TraumaMan System now comes with both a surgical trachea - which is a replaceable part intended for procedures; and a non-surgical trachea - which is intended to be a palpable external landmark only for system users who do not use TraumaMan for the percutaneous tracheostomy.
To ease the process of sliding the trachea on to the tube, add a small amount of lubricating gel to the inside of the replacement part and to the trachea tube for easier installation. The non-surgical trachea creates a very tight seal around the trachea tube so it may require a bit of pressure to slide it on to the trachea tube. Refer to the User's Guide for more detailed instructions.
Contact Simulab if you would like more information about the non-surgical trachea (TMTP-10). Applies to TraumaMan purchase customers only.
TraumaChild Introductory Video now available
If you haven’t met TraumaChild in person yet – this brief introductory video is the next best thing. It provides an overview of the system’s features and also what to expect with each procedure. TraumaChild offers a first cut experience to each user and bleeds and breathes like TraumaMan, but simulates a five year old child. Contact Simulab for more information today.
