Simulab Creating
Partnership with Grey's Anatomy

 |
| A scene from the 03.22.07 episode with
Patrick Dempsey (who plays Derek Shepherd) and Ellen Pompeo (who plays Meredith Grey)
practicing surgical techniques in Simulation Lab on the
Grey's Anatomy set. |
Simulab Corporation has been providing the medical education community
with vital training tools such as
TraumaMan®,
CentraLineManTM
and the
LapTrainerTM
since 1994 and now it can add Hollywood to its list of customers.
It is said that life imitates art. However, rapidly expanding use of
surgical simulation into the “real life” medical education world is paralleling
the “art” world as Grey’s Anatomy and Simulab form a partnership to
create the show’s Simulation Lab. Ironically, Simulab has been a partner
with the University of Washington’s School of Medicine collaborating on
surgical simulations for over 13 years and Grey’s Anatomy is set at a
fictitious Seattle Medical School.
Grey's Anatomy was first introduced to Simulab products through contacts
at the University of Southern California who supplied the show with a
tissue suture pad. In an effort to develop new settings in which to film
the show, Grey's Anatomy contacted Simulab to inquire about other
simulation-related products available. In response to that inquiry Doug
Beighle, President, and Chris Toly, CEO, spent a day on the set with the
cast and crew setting up a Surgical Simulation Lab - similar to the one actually
used by the University of Washington’s School of Medicine. Simulab’s
products populate this scene, helping raise awareness of the key role
simulation plays today in Medical Education.
